HSC ~ Jafar Guide

image

Another High Score Challenge!  Though these are my favorite in-game event, they are probably my least favorite guide to make.  This time we get Jafar and Jafar-Genie, which to everyone’s disappointment are not the Little Mermaid medals.  They are both damage medals that are stronger the later they are used on a keyblade.  In other words, Slot 5 would be stronger than Slot 1.

This HSC is back to the classics.  As you traverse four screens, the enemies get harder and harder.  You can go back to previous screens and there is only one pathway.  Here’s your multiplier list:

image
image

The 21% multipliers are the two most recently added premiums: Illustrated Xion and HD Axel.  In another predictable Square-signature dick move, HD Mickey is at 10%.  HD Riku and Illustrated Xemnas are also sitting at 10%.  Basically, only premiums are worth anything.  But you’ll find some freebies trickled in there at 7%, like Christmas Sora, Larxene B, and the Moana medals.

Enemy List:

Room 1
Lv. 50 Wibble Wobble (S) x3

*x2 Strength
**x2 Magic & Speed Defense
***x2 PSM Defense

Strategy:
Although you’ll see all three types in this mission, almost all the powerful ones are Speed.  This means Treasure Trove, Olympia, and Moogle O’ Glory are your options.  Though Olympia has the highest power multiplier, it only has one usable slot, where TT and MoG both offer more Power-heavy slots.  But Magic is less effective against Speed, which makes MoG a little less desirable.  At the moment I’m thinking my TT is doing the best, given this mission has so many extra Special chests.

For your first run, you should go about the mission as normal and see where your problem areas are.  The Invisibles in Room 3 and the Gargoyles in Room 4 were the worst for me. (I still can’t beat the Cannon Guns, and I probably never will.) Once you identify where you’re most likely to die, head straight there and fight those enemies first.  DB procs don’t help a lot since all the big enemies are in groups, so Second Chance or Sleep+ are basically essential.  After you kill two of your problem groups by relying on procs, clear out the entire level before confronting what will wind up being your final foe.  Do as much damage as you can before you die.

Always save the Special chests and Gift Shadows for when you need them.  Also, leave enemies in the first screen and the Hook Bats in the second alive to refill special later on.  A full clear will net you between 19-21 million.  Though multipliers are always important, don’t let them stand in the way of clearing an extra group of enemies.

Rewards:
There are four Jafar medals in Score Rewards: at 7.5, 15, 20, and 30 million.  There are two Jafar-Genie medals in Score Rewards as well, both at 40 million.

There are up to (the equivalent of) eight Jafar medals in rankings.  The top 20k get one, the top 5k get two, the top 2k get three, and the top 1k get two three-dotted versions.  This means to guilt Jafar you need either 30 million in the Top 2k or any score in the top 1k.

There are up to (the equivalent of) five Jafar-Genie medals in rankings.  The top 5k get one, the top 2k get three, and the top 1k get five.  This means to guilt Jafar-Genie you need to be in the top 1k as well as score at least 40 million.  This will require above a 90% multiplier (which is at least four HD Axels/iXions). It hurts me to even type that…

Lastly, Power gems were added to the mix.  Top 5k get one, 2k get two, and 1k get three.  And to make it all worse, you only have the four days leading up to Christmas to finish the event!

*sigh*

Good luck.  Event ends 12/25.

I have illustrated kari should I still try to get sebastian? My friends says i should have both

Well, Sebastian and Ariel&Flounder are not in the Global game yet, but they should be after the holidays!  They both do the same thing - +3 Str for 1 turn - and are basically iKairi minus the heal.  Where Sebastian’s special cost is crazy high, A&F is the same as iKairi.  Since iKairi and A&F/Seb can’t stack, there’s really no reason to have two.

However!  Skills are important!  If you have Sebastian with a Cost 1, you could have an iKairi with a Defense Boost 3 or a Second Chance.  Or if you get A&F, you could use DB3 on that and Cost 1 on iKairi.  In this way, having multiples of essentially the same medal can be very useful!

In the JP version, Seb and A&F are from a high score challenge, similar to the TWEWY one.  I think you’ll probably get Sebastian without even trying!  A&F will be another story.

In short, yes, it is good to have both!  It’s always good to have more options.  But Sebastian won’t be essential to you the way it will be to players without iKairi.

Hope this helped!!

When you are the admin of a party in KHUx, is it rude to recruit players that are at a higher level than you? Thanks! -Level 20 And Unsure

Oh gosh no!  Not rude at all!  Back when I was level 210, I recruited a handful of level 230s.  Though I’m the leader of my party, I’m probably only the third or fourth strongest!  If you can cultivate a cool team of people, even as its weakest player, you are bringing something strong to the party.  That’s way more important than level. ^_^

Org. XIII Event - Larxene

image

So Larxene B is pretty great for a guaranteed Tier 3 guilt medal.  She’s not quite as good as Marluxia A, but she’s free and only costs one gauge!  The event is remarkably easier than last month, so if you weren’t able to get Marluxia B you shouldn’t consider yourself out of the running for Larxene.

Larxene’s abilities have a lot of influence on these missions!  Specifically, four of the missions are “Kill the enemies with little HP”, a play on Larxene’s ability to clone herself when attacking.  Additionally, there are five timed missions where the enemies move around quickly and Larxene is known for her speed and difficulty to pin down.  The rest of the missions are littered with Wizards that pre-cast Thunder on you - Larxene’s element - and finally a showdown with a Behemoth, who paralyzes you with Thunder attacks.  With Square’s dedication to theming these Organization events, I’m REALLY excited for the next one!

You can get a total of 7 Larxenes, which is enough to guilt without a reroll.  Each mission also rewards 20 jewels for 260 jewels total. Here are the missions, their rewards, and the general strategy for beating them.

Mission 1: Huey&Dewey&Louie
The ones that don’t walk around are the Little HP ones.  Target included.

Mission 2: Magic Mirror
Avoid the dogs.

Mission 3: Larxene
Four groups, all on the path down.

Mission 4: Huey&Dewey&Louie
The groups that only have one enemy are the Little HP enemies, including Target.

Mission 5: Larxene
Avoid the copters.  There are 3 screens.  This one sucks.  Don’t hug the walls.  First screen, the portal is in the bottom right.  Second screen, the portal is in the top right.

Mission 6: Magic Mirror
Two High Wizard groups at the top.  Four Wizard groups at the bottom.  Target.

Mission 7: Magic Mirror
Avoid the dogs.  Hug the walls.  It’s a lot easier than Mission 5.

Mission 8: Larxene
The ones with sparkles by their feet are the Little HP enemies, including target.

Mission 9: Hairstyles
Four unavoidable High Wizards before the final group.

Mission 10: Larxene
Avoid the dogs.  If they are moving too fast, just wait a second.  This is very easy.

Mission 11: Larxene
The groups that only have one enemy are the Little HP enemies, including Target.

Mission 12: Larxene
Avoid the planes and dogs.  Three screens.  This one is pretty easy.  Zig zag through the first two screens.  Then just run from one side to the other in the last screen.

Mission 13: Larxene
Just a Behemoth fight.  He’s got a lot of health bars, but he doesn’t hit very hard.  Bring some buff medals and a really good damage dealer and you should be fine.  J&S is great for this one.  For his first hit he does x1 strength.  For his third hit that goes up to x2 strength.  He has a chance to paralyze you too.

Title: No. XII

Event ends on Dec. 19th!  Good luck!

Kingdom Hearts ~ For Beginners

This is the ultimate sign post for people who are just getting into the Kingdom Hearts series.  We’ll go through all the games, the order you should play them, and the important parts of each one.  No spoilers.

First and foremost: Why play Kingdom Hearts?

No one will be able to explain this better than Casen Sperry in this video :
(Please do not click the video link unless you are outright against playing this series and need some solid convincing.  There are minor KH1 spoilers.)

“Kingdom Hearts may not seem appealing to anyone over the age of twelve, but its deep storyline, beautiful soundtrack, innovative battle system, and heartfelt characters make playing this game an immersive and unforgettable experience.

The parallels between the player and Sora himself are what make it so easy to connect to this game.  We want to explore other worlds.  We want to help people.  We welcome people we don’t know into our hearts.

There’s a separate criteria than just the objective ‘was a game technically good or not’. The additional criteria involves the immeasurable.  How can you measure an emotional connection or a relationship?  I use words like ‘powerful’ and ‘beautiful’ to describe things I find difficult to quantify.  What I can quantify, however, is that only a handful of games have ever evoked such a response from me.  Kingdom Hearts is on that list, and I’m willing to bet that whatever your opinion was of the game, you know what I’m referring to.”

If you’re not a huge fan of Disney, please read this post where I explain the relevance of Disney in the franchise and why you don’t necessarily have to be a fan of Disney to be a fan of Kingdom Hearts.

Now that I’ve got you hooked, let’s get into the good stuff!

Guide to Nova

Nova is a new feature that gives you a one time use AOE attack per mission.  When you get into combat, you’ll find the button on the right side, as shown below:

image

If you hit that button, it will perform the attack.  When you fight the next enemy in the same mission, the button is no longer there:

image

This adds an element of strategy to using Nova - specifically, you want to use it against the strongest enemies in the stage and usually in groups.  This is where you’ll get the most benefit.

Nova damage is very special because it isn’t affected very strongly by enemy level.  Often, if an enemy is a high level it has high defense.  This makes normal attacks and sometimes non-buffed special attacks do no damage.  It’s annoying in Coliseum and High Score Challenges when you just need that one little hit left and you don’t want to waste Special bars to get it!  But where a 10k attack with a medal might get turned into 1 damage at high level enemies, a 10k Nova does not.  It is very reliable damage.

Nova damage is also calculated as non-attribute damage.  It can be buffed by strength up medals such as Pooh, Piglet, and Illustrated Kairi.  It can also be buffed by defense down medals like Mr. Smee and Megara.  However, Nova damage is not affected by type-strength or type-defense: no Jack&Sally, Illustrated Black Coat Mickey, or Sora&Donald&Goofy.

For example:

Nova: 28,384 damage
iKairi + Nova: 45,821 damage
iKairi + J&S + Nova: 45,821 damage

Lastly, Nova can be leveled up.  Each unique medal that you have guilted will give 1 level to your nova, and each unique medal that is at its maximum guilt will give 5 levels to your nova.  This is sometimes hard to keep track of, but luckily the Album is updated to keep track of it for you:

image

The empty circle next to 6* Riku shows it has not been guilted and has contributed 0 levels to Nova.

The bright circle next to 6* Goofy shows it has been guilted to maximum (50% in this case) and has contributed 6 levels to Nova.  One for guilting, five for maximum.

The dim circle next to 6* Mushu shows it has been guilted, but not to maximum (42% rather than 50%) and has contributed 1 level to Nova.

My Nova level is at 154, meaning I have guilted 49 medals, with 21 at max guilt.  21x5=105+49=154.

Leveling up your Nova gives it more damage.

Lv. 42: ~10,000
Lv. 61: ~13,000
Lv. 154: ~28,000

The general consensus is that with +3 Strength, Nova goes up ~25k per 100 levels.

However, you can only get this bonus from each medal ONE TIME.  That is, if you guilt Mushu twice, you only get one Nova level.  If you get two Mushus to 50%, you still only get 5 levels, not 10.  I have two 100% Meowjestys, but I only got 6 levels, not 12.

Once you get the Nova bonus, you keep it forever.  You can sell the medal if you want and you won’t lose any Nova levels.

Now there are a couple obvious ways to get your Nova level up, so let’s do a quick run down:

1.) Farmables.  You can do story missions to endlessly guilt and reroll.  There are 15 farmables, which is 90 levels of Nova!  The best part is, you don’t have to waste any magic mirrors if you have the patience and luck.

2.) Events.  Often there are events such as the Jungle Book one or the Meow Wow one where they give you an infinite number of a single medal.  Getting those medals guilted and rerolled is a great way to boost your Nova.

3.) Save everything.  It might seem trivial to keep Dumbo around, but when you pull your fifteenth one you might regret selling them!  I actually have a 100% guilted Megara - though it serves no practical purpose - because I held onto multiples.

4.) Magic Mirrors.  They can tip your 98% rolls into 100%.  Don’t spend 20 MM just for five Nova levels though!  Spend your MM on medals you will actually use!  I would use no more than three or four MM on a medal you won’t use - for instance, I used three MM on my Megara.  But I wouldn’t use 8 MM to get Mushu for 42% to 50%.

5.) Wait until Guilt Events, when minimum guilt rolls are much higher.  This isn’t important for T1 Farmables, but T2, T3, etc. are limited chances.  And the higher you roll for guilt, the less Mirrors you need to get the extra 5 levels from Max Guilt.

Remember: Nova is great.  It’s an amazing advantage and a great new strategic attack.  But investing your resources - specifically Magic Mirrors - into Nova over something useful (like Marluxia B) actually puts you at a disadvantage.  Nova is a supplemental attack: it is not your main damage.  You can only use it once per mission.  Your medals come first.

Alright that’s everything I can think of!  If anyone has comments or questions feel free to message me!  I’m going to try putting up more guides like this in the future.

Thank you and good luck on those guilt rolls!!

Maleficent HSC Guide

It’s that time of week.  A new High Score Challenge!  This time the rewards are Maleficent and Pete!  Maleficent is a big deal.  She’s a premium Tier 4 and the magic-reversed equivalent of Illustrated Black Coat Mickey.  And instead of being locked behind 200 dollars or luck, you can get it with a lot of perseverance and… well, still luck.

Here’s the multipliers:

image
image

HD Sora and the three new Epic children are up at 21% and 14%.  iBCM is holding strong at 10%.  And guess what: all those Meow Wow’s you farmed up are 7% too!  And if you got Marluxia from the event, that’s 7% too.  Honestly, it’s a very considerate list.

As for the challenge itself, it’s another gauntlet-style “kill all you can before you die” sort of thing.  At the beginning, you’ll choose which pathway you want.  One for each type.  Each room only has one enemy group to kill, then you move onto the next one.  There is no returning back to previous rooms.  Sometimes there are Special chests, but no health ones (to my knowledge).  Unfortunately, I didn’t get far with Speed or Magic medals, so I’m not sure exactly how far these things go.  If you have more to add, please comment and I’ll put them on the list.

List of enemies:

Lv. 350 Defender & Gargoyle Knight x2

Chest - 6 bars

Lv. 400 Red Copter Fleet & Morning Star

Lv. 420 Bad Dog x5

Lv. 450 Wyvern

Rewards:

You get a Pete at 5, 7, 8, and 10 million points.  There’s a lot of magic mirrors along the way.  The top 1000 ranked get the equivalent of 4 Petes.  The top 2000 get 3.

As for Maleficent, the top 5000 get one, up to a guilted version for the top 200.

Strategy:

Very unlike the previous HSC, this one is based on skill and medals.  Multipliers are important, but more so is killing the enemies and moving onto the next group.  Combining the two is difficult, but with Marluxia and Meowjesty it’s not too bad.  Status plus or second chance are basically required for lv. 400 and higher.

I’m hungry and Gilmore Girls just came out on Netflix so that’s it.  Good luck!  Ends 12/01!
