+Caution - applies debuffs

It looks like x3 and x9 are going to be the ones you want to skip this month.  The Cheery Apes are sort of this month’s Gigas Shadows - lots and lots of health.  If you had good luck last month with the Gigas Shadows you can take your chances on these guys, though!  Yellow Copter Fleet is going to be just as bad as Blue’s was last month.  There are no mix-attribute groups.  The Coliseum after WoFF medals came out - who would have guessed!  But this opens up a lot of versatility with keyblade and medal selection too.  Lastly, the Pester Jester puts one of a few different debuffs on you at the start of your encounter.  If you get one that really hinders your attacks, just reload the game.

Rewards:

Completing Tier 10 gives 2900 coins and each board costs 1100.  The boards are very standard - nothing worth remarking on.  The titles are “War-Torn” for the blue, and “Pinnacle” for the pink.

A new Bonus Board was added!  This changes very little, except it - like the other one - starts with a Magic Mirror.  One is 600 coins, the other is 900 coins.  If you manage to get to Round 80 of Tier 11 this month - which is a little under the top 10k - you can actually buy both Magic Mirrors if you forgo the EXP medals!  I advise doing this - MM are limited and EXP medals are not.

This month’s rank reward is Attack Boost III + Attack Prize Plus.  Top 10k get one, top 1k get two, and the top 100 get three.  If you have any guilted medals that are good with APP (J&S, iXion, TVA, etc.) this is a great addition to your repertoire.  If you have your APP on non-guilted buffs (like me… >_<) then this really isn’t worth a lot of trouble.  Getting one is probably fine.

Then there’s the Cids, Magic Mirrors, Moogles, Skills, etc… the usual stuff.  AB2 and DB2 are still on the Coliseum boards if you need them.

ALRIGHT THERE YOU GO!  That’s it!  Good luck this month!

KH 0.2 - Guide for Objectives 31 & 41 - Phantom Aqua

Objective 31: Queen of the Rink - perform Spellweaver’s Finisher
Objective 41: Flawless Victory - take no hits from Phantom Aqua round 3

This fight is a demonstration in patience.  Aqua’s block basically guarantees that you’ll never get hit if you get the timing right, with one or two exceptions.  Her teleports all have unique animations and you’ll quickly learn to read her movements to determine when to block (0:11).  The game gives a generous amount of time for her block animation so you can hit it at the last second or way too early and still find yourself in good shape.  After ever block, you should counter.  She disappears too fast to wait out the animation.

Other than her teleport strikes, she has three main abilities you’ll want to avoid.

Blizzaga creates a series (I want to say six or eight) huge elemental spike balls that she will throw at you.  These can be blocked, but they can also dodge roll out if you get the timing right.  Basically, the second they should do damage to you,  you should cartwheel away.  Luckily, she only seems to use this specific ability /after/ using Spellweaver.  Chances are, you won’t even have to deal with Blizzaga.

Her phantom images are the second ability (0:22).  When she gently walks toward you, you can either hit her or wait a few seconds, then she will split into many copies of herself.  There are two ways to handle this.  You can lock on and search for the real one - who has a greater health bar - or you can just cast Thundaga and move on with the fight.  If you can find her you’ll get a great combo, but if you don’t you risk losing the arrows you are trying to build up for Spellweaver.  To keep the fight moving, I usually just use Thundaga.

Lastly is her Spellweaver finisher (0:31).  She turns into three versions of your Spellweaver finisher and spins around you.  When she slows down, she comes into the middle.  You can block and counter, but I find cartwheel out and back in again gives you an almost guaranteed combo (0:36).  This is the attack you want her to use - it’s easy to dodge and it guarantees at least two finishers.

Now for the strategy.  If you’re going for Objective 31, you can start with a Shotlock while she transforms (0:08).  If you’re going for Objective 41, a Shotlock at the start puts you too open to being attacked.

Stay in the middle of the room.  Block everything until she uses one of her special moves.  If you get hit, don’t give up right away.  Practice getting your block timing down.  When she uses a special like Spellweaver, then just take the death and Retry.

When she finally uses Spellweaver, follow the instructions above to land a combo.  Once you finish the first combo, let her hit the ground (0:42).  If you try to attack her again before she hits the ground, she’ll teleport away.  After she touches down, unload another combo.  Assuming you got a few block counters on her, this should give you enough to activate Spellweaver.  She’ll disappear after this and launch into a new attack.

Conveniently, the chance is extremely high of her using her Spellweaver finisher right after you change into Spellweaver (0:47)!  This is exactly what you want to happen.  Rinse and repeat the actions above and you’ll max out your Spellweaver to use your finisher, granting you Objective 31!  Whoo!  Good job!

There is a caveat to this, however.  On Critical or Beginner, too many counters will lower her health too much for you to get the finisher off before you kill her.  I really recommend you do Objective 31 on Normal or Proud, since there’s more room for error.  If you’re doing it on Critical, I recommend using block without counter for the first few teleport strikes.

If you are working on 31 and 41 at different times - which I highly recommend you do - then you can use any time you get hit to land a good combo before she disappears.  Block’s animation takes too long and she vanishes, but without block you can get some hits on her after a few specific teleports.

Objective 41, however, you should do on Beginner or Critical - I recommend doing it on your Critical playthrough for Objective 51.  Because you never get hit, the damage taken is irrelevant for Objectives 41 and 47.  You also do significantly more damage on Beginner and Critical, which means the fight is over much faster.

Alright!  That’s it!  If you have any questions or anything send me a message!

KH 0.2 - Guide for Objective 47 - Darkside

Objective 47: Keeper of the Orb - take no hits during the Darkside fight

This guy can be really frustrating, but he requires more luck than skill.  When the fight starts, the path leading up to him is bombarded with dark orbs (0:08).  When they hit the ground, they leave a black puddle and a ball of spikes forms in the middle of it.  The puddle doesn’t hurt you, so don’t worry about that, but you’ll get hit many times just on the way to the boss himself.  If this happens, it’s best to run into more spikes and die to reset.

I recommend not jumping if you can help it.  The longer you stay in one area of the path, the more orbs start to fall in that section.  You want to get to the end of the path as quickly as possible so that there are statistically less orbs to deal with.  Jumping breaks your momentum so only use it if it’s necessary.

Once you get to the Darkside, the orbs stop falling.  His hands are his weak points - pick one and start wailing on it.  After one or two combos, he will do one of two attacks that you will recognize from every other KH game:

Dark Pool (1:12): an orb of light will appear in his hand and he will punch it downward into the ground, creating a pool where Shadows will spawn.  You can’t touch the orb of light, you can’t be on the ground when he punches down, and you can’t let the Shadows overwhelm you.  I’ve died more than once to some errant Shadow getting in a cheap shot when I was attacking the hand.  My recommendation is to spam Thundaga three times, resetting your MP.  You won’t need healing for the Objective anyway.  If you hit every Shadow, this will give you the Thundaja finisher, dealing half a health bar of damage to the Darkside.

Missiles (0:35): he will kneel down and shoot three waves of missiles out of his chest.  Get some distance and block, which will deflect the missiles back at him.  After the third wave, go back to attacking his hand.

After the Darkside performs one of these attacks, he will rain the orbs back down on you (0:53).  When this phase ends, he will use the attack he didn’t use the first time.  Rinse and repeat.

When the Darkside gets to 2 and two thirds health bars, he will absorb the power of the orb above him.  His hands will no longer be targetable - only his head.  That’s how you know he is switching to Phase 2.  Luckily, he finishes out his attack before he switches phases, giving you more time to do damage to him if he’s in the middle of casting Missiles, Dark Pool, or the rain of orbs.

Phase 2 is incredibly erratic and very hard to dodge.  That’s why I advise you to kill him before this phase happens.  That’s where your Shotlock comes in.

Strategy.  Don’t hesitate.  During the orb phases, just attack as much as possible.  You’ll probably get hit with an orb about 40-50% of the time and have to restart, but avoiding them for 5 minutes only to get hit by something else isn’t worth the time or energy.  When Missiles start, block.  When Dark Pool happens, Thundaga.  If you get to Spellweaver, use it immediately.

If you push him into his third health bar - where he is about to begin Phase 2 - give him a second to start his next attack.  Do as much damage as you can, then cast all of your Thundagas, all of your finishers (except Spellweaver - it can take a long time and he is invincible in Phase 2) and then Shotlock the last two bars of health before he goes invincible.  And bam.  Done.

You’ll notice in the video I use Spellweaver finisher near the end there.  I was trying to use Thunder, actually. ^_^;  Oops.  But luckily he was still well into the animation of Dark Pool and it worked in my favor!

As with Objective 41, I really recommend Critical or Beginner for this fight.  The more damage you do, the less time there is to make a mistake.  Proud mode takes a very long time and Normal isn’t that much better.  Because you aren’t taking damage, how hard the Darkside hits doesn’t matter.

Alright!  That’s it!  If you have any questions or anything send an ask!

Org. XIII Event Guide - Xemnas

Fuck this event.

So, every mission is timed.  Every mission is a boss.  And they are all terribly difficult.  It’s a little disappointing because the Marluxia and Larxene events were so tailored to the individual members and their personalities, but Xemnas just gets “there are bosses, beat them fast”. Oh well…

Your reward is Xemnas B, a tier 3 guilt AOE Power with x3.10 and PSM down one tier for one turn.  Here’s a picture.  He’s only a bit better than Saïx for five bars instead of four and there’s not a very good place for Reversed Power on keyblades anyway.  Honestly, if I were you, I’d skip the event altogether.

To guilt this medal, you will need a buff clear medal (see Alice, Belle, etc.).  That’s not negotiable.  You will need DB3 or Second Chance and you absolutely, 100% will need iKairi.  If you don’t have at least one GDD (iXion, Meg, etc.) - probably two - you’re not going to get far.  Lastly, you’ll very likely spend jewels since none of the requirements are one-turn.

So let’s get down to it.  The layout is as follows:

Stage number.) Level of enemy Enemy name (Type +Additional health bars) +buffs
Complete in under this many seconds for reward - reward

1.) Lv. 50 Possessors (M)
40 seconds - HDL

2.) Lv. 75 Playing Cards (S +2)
50 seconds - MM

3.) Lv 100 Enraged Elk (P +9) + 3 P-Def
75 seconds - Xemnas

4.) Lv. 125 Queen Bee (M +24)
70 seconds - HDL

5.) Lv. 150 Cerberus (P +2) +2 PSM-Str
45 seconds - Xemnas

6.) Lv. 175 Wretched Witch (M) +1 S-Def
45 seconds - MM

7.) Lv. 200 Savage Spider (P +29) Sleep/Paralyze/Poison
90 seconds - MM

8.) Lv. 225 Guard Armor (S +46) +2 Def
180 seconds - Xemnas

9.) Lv. 250 Huge Snowman (M +43) +3 PSM-Def (+3 PSM-Str on turn 3)
200/230 seconds - Hairstyle

10.) Lv. 270 Behemoth (P +46) (builds P-Str)
180 seconds - Xemnas

11.) Lv. 280 Trickmaster (M +47)
180 seconds - Xemnas

12.) Lv. 290 Darkside Omega (S +64) +1 Def/+1 Str/Poison
180 seconds - Xemnas

13.) Lv. 300 Gummi Hound (S +59) +1 Str/+1 P-Str
180 seconds - Xemnas / 210 seconds - Title: No. I

Specifically, the thirteenth stage, the Gummi Hound uses a one-hit raid mechanic after 35 hits.  You’ll either need second chance or use jewels to beat it, because I don’t see how someone would beat this in 35 hits.

The last three are all going to require an insane amount of luck or a few continues because they all one-hit.  When you’re racing the clock, you’ll want to stack as many GDD and J&S medals as possible on top of iKairi and one hardcore damage medal.  One medal with APP will get you all your SP back, so Key Art isn’t necessary.  Use your friend slot for high damage, even though they don’t benefit from multiplier slots.  Using Sleep+ also works but it’s tenuous at best.

Honestly this whole event is insane.  After so many “for the people!” events like Donald, Goofy, and Larxene, I’m not surprised they made a challenging one.  But this reminds me of that level 500 ghost around Halloween that almost no one completed.  Working around the mechanics of things like the Marluxia event make sense to me as a gamer, but this event and its requirements is very strictly for the best of the best.  It’s a little alienating, especially for such a subpar medal.

People with more in-depth boss strategies, please put them in the comments!  I still can’t beat Mission 12 (I got a lot of this info from my roommate who spent over 1000 jewels), so we’ll see how it goes!

Anyway.  Good luck!

Boards:
The outfits are awesome.  Keyblade armor for Terra and Aqua!  The boards have also been updated with DB2 and AB2 (yay!) and for some reason Attack Boost All II was added to the game.  You know.  Because how everyone loved ABA1 so much.  The titles for the Terra and Aqua boards are Passionate and Elite respectively, and like always you can get everything on both boards by completing Tier 10.

Rankings:
Top 10k get the SP1 ability, a long awaited treasure that makes any medal cost only 1 SP!  And it’s for the top 10k instead of the top 2.5k, making it much more obtainable!  This is an absolute necessity in this game.  It really levels the playing field for players with iKairi and those who will eventually get medals like Ariel&Flounder or Sebastian.  The only downside is that there is very little incentive to push for 2.5k.  Top 1k and Top 100, however, can get 2 or 3 SP1s respectively.

Good luck this month!  It’s shaping up to be a great year for KHUX!

HSC ~ Jafar Guide

image

Another High Score Challenge!  Though these are my favorite in-game event, they are probably my least favorite guide to make.  This time we get Jafar and Jafar-Genie, which to everyone’s disappointment are not the Little Mermaid medals.  They are both damage medals that are stronger the later they are used on a keyblade.  In other words, Slot 5 would be stronger than Slot 1.

This HSC is back to the classics.  As you traverse four screens, the enemies get harder and harder.  You can go back to previous screens and there is only one pathway.  Here’s your multiplier list:

image
image

The 21% multipliers are the two most recently added premiums: Illustrated Xion and HD Axel.  In another predictable Square-signature dick move, HD Mickey is at 10%.  HD Riku and Illustrated Xemnas are also sitting at 10%.  Basically, only premiums are worth anything.  But you’ll find some freebies trickled in there at 7%, like Christmas Sora, Larxene B, and the Moana medals.

Enemy List:

Room 1
Lv. 50 Wibble Wobble (S) x3
Lv. 50 Hook Hat (S)

Chest (6 bars)
Chest (6 bars)
Chest (6 bars)
Health Chest x3

*x2 Strength
**x2 Magic & Speed Defense
***x2 PSM Defense

Strategy:
Although you’ll see all three types in this mission, almost all the powerful ones are Speed.  This means Treasure Trove, Olympia, and Moogle O’ Glory are your options.  Though Olympia has the highest power multiplier, it only has one usable slot, where TT and MoG both offer more Power-heavy slots.  But Magic is less effective against Speed, which makes MoG a little less desirable.  At the moment I’m thinking my TT is doing the best, given this mission has so many extra Special chests.

For your first run, you should go about the mission as normal and see where your problem areas are.  The Invisibles in Room 3 and the Gargoyles in Room 4 were the worst for me. (I still can’t beat the Cannon Guns, and I probably never will.) Once you identify where you’re most likely to die, head straight there and fight those enemies first.  DB procs don’t help a lot since all the big enemies are in groups, so Second Chance or Sleep+ are basically essential.  After you kill two of your problem groups by relying on procs, clear out the entire level before confronting what will wind up being your final foe.  Do as much damage as you can before you die.

Always save the Special chests and Gift Shadows for when you need them.  Also, leave enemies in the first screen and the Hook Bats in the second alive to refill special later on.  A full clear will net you between 19-21 million.  Though multipliers are always important, don’t let them stand in the way of clearing an extra group of enemies.

Rewards:
There are four Jafar medals in Score Rewards: at 7.5, 15, 20, and 30 million.  There are two Jafar-Genie medals in Score Rewards as well, both at 40 million.

There are up to (the equivalent of) eight Jafar medals in rankings.  The top 20k get one, the top 5k get two, the top 2k get three, and the top 1k get two three-dotted versions.  This means to guilt Jafar you need either 30 million in the Top 2k or any score in the top 1k.

There are up to (the equivalent of) five Jafar-Genie medals in rankings.  The top 5k get one, the top 2k get three, and the top 1k get five.  This means to guilt Jafar-Genie you need to be in the top 1k as well as score at least 40 million.  This will require above a 90% multiplier (which is at least four HD Axels/iXions). It hurts me to even type that…

Lastly, Power gems were added to the mix.  Top 5k get one, 2k get two, and 1k get three.  And to make it all worse, you only have the four days leading up to Christmas to finish the event!

*sigh*

Good luck.  Event ends 12/25.

Org. XIII Event - Larxene

image

So Larxene B is pretty great for a guaranteed Tier 3 guilt medal.  She’s not quite as good as Marluxia A, but she’s free and only costs one gauge!  The event is remarkably easier than last month, so if you weren’t able to get Marluxia B you shouldn’t consider yourself out of the running for Larxene.

Larxene’s abilities have a lot of influence on these missions!  Specifically, four of the missions are “Kill the enemies with little HP”, a play on Larxene’s ability to clone herself when attacking.  Additionally, there are five timed missions where the enemies move around quickly and Larxene is known for her speed and difficulty to pin down.  The rest of the missions are littered with Wizards that pre-cast Thunder on you - Larxene’s element - and finally a showdown with a Behemoth, who paralyzes you with Thunder attacks.  With Square’s dedication to theming these Organization events, I’m REALLY excited for the next one!

You can get a total of 7 Larxenes, which is enough to guilt without a reroll.  Each mission also rewards 20 jewels for 260 jewels total. Here are the missions, their rewards, and the general strategy for beating them.

Mission 1: Huey&Dewey&Louie
The ones that don’t walk around are the Little HP ones.  Target included.

Mission 2: Magic Mirror
Avoid the dogs.

Mission 3: Larxene
Four groups, all on the path down.

Mission 4: Huey&Dewey&Louie
The groups that only have one enemy are the Little HP enemies, including Target.

Mission 5: Larxene
Avoid the copters.  There are 3 screens.  This one sucks.  Don’t hug the walls.  First screen, the portal is in the bottom right.  Second screen, the portal is in the top right.

Mission 6: Magic Mirror
Two High Wizard groups at the top.  Four Wizard groups at the bottom.  Target.

Mission 7: Magic Mirror
Avoid the dogs.  Hug the walls.  It’s a lot easier than Mission 5.

Mission 8: Larxene
The ones with sparkles by their feet are the Little HP enemies, including target.

Mission 9: Hairstyles
Four unavoidable High Wizards before the final group.

Mission 10: Larxene
Avoid the dogs.  If they are moving too fast, just wait a second.  This is very easy.

Mission 11: Larxene
The groups that only have one enemy are the Little HP enemies, including Target.

Mission 12: Larxene
Avoid the planes and dogs.  Three screens.  This one is pretty easy.  Zig zag through the first two screens.  Then just run from one side to the other in the last screen.

Mission 13: Larxene
Just a Behemoth fight.  He’s got a lot of health bars, but he doesn’t hit very hard.  Bring some buff medals and a really good damage dealer and you should be fine.  J&S is great for this one.  For his first hit he does x1 strength.  For his third hit that goes up to x2 strength.  He has a chance to paralyze you too.

Title: No. XII

Event ends on Dec. 19th!  Good luck!

Kingdom Hearts ~ For Beginners

This is the ultimate sign post for people who are just getting into the Kingdom Hearts series.  We’ll go through all the games, the order you should play them, and the important parts of each one.  No spoilers.

First and foremost: Why play Kingdom Hearts?

No one will be able to explain this better than Casen Sperry in this video :
(Please do not click the video link unless you are outright against playing this series and need some solid convincing.  There are minor KH1 spoilers.)

“Kingdom Hearts may not seem appealing to anyone over the age of twelve, but its deep storyline, beautiful soundtrack, innovative battle system, and heartfelt characters make playing this game an immersive and unforgettable experience.

The parallels between the player and Sora himself are what make it so easy to connect to this game.  We want to explore other worlds.  We want to help people.  We welcome people we don’t know into our hearts.

There’s a separate criteria than just the objective ‘was a game technically good or not’. The additional criteria involves the immeasurable.  How can you measure an emotional connection or a relationship?  I use words like ‘powerful’ and ‘beautiful’ to describe things I find difficult to quantify.  What I can quantify, however, is that only a handful of games have ever evoked such a response from me.  Kingdom Hearts is on that list, and I’m willing to bet that whatever your opinion was of the game, you know what I’m referring to.”

If you’re not a huge fan of Disney, please read this post where I explain the relevance of Disney in the franchise and why you don’t necessarily have to be a fan of Disney to be a fan of Kingdom Hearts.

Now that I’ve got you hooked, let’s get into the good stuff!

Additionally, the top 250k players (basically everyone) will get the Pegasus Helm and the top 2,500 players get the Pegasus Tail.  The tail has a +5 Omega Raid Boss perk.  The top 10k also get AB2+Lux Plus.

I’m not going to even pretend like I understand strategies for Coliseum anymore, so good luck!  Happy Holidays!! ^_^
